In this talk I will first survey the connection between classical symmetric
functions and theory of vertex operators and then talk about some recent
work on skew Schur functions and skew Schur polynomials as well as their generalizations. Some of these new works originated from questions in representation theory, algebraic topology and algebraic geometry.
